After years (literally) of persistent nagging by me and my ward councillor colleagues, and by Tom Brake our local MP, Network Rail have at long last replaced the pigeon proof netting under Wallington Railway Bridge and removed the disgusting dead bird carcasses.Network Rail finally carried out the work over the last few days. They have repaired the metal ‘nets’ on the underside of the bridge on the pedestrian walkways, removing opportunities for pigeons to roost. I am checking whether they have sealed up the routes that pigeons use to access their roosts from the trackside as well.
Unfortunately the birds have now moved to the road section of the bridge and this will inevitably lead to more mess in the road. I have asked the council to monitor this and increase cleansing if necessary

Whilst I can understand the view that the pigeons leave mess and the carcasses are not pleasant, what is your view regarding the fact that LIVE pigeons were trapped behing that new netting and left to starve to death and are now hanging dead out of it. I contacted the RSPCA and they didn't come to help in time, but I think its appalling that any form of life has been treated so cruelly, the problem hasn't been solved at all has it? We still have the same number of pigeons living there. We all have to live somewhere, and all our toilet waste ends up somewhere, ours usually ends up in the sea and you dont see fish putting nets round us while we starve to death. I have photographic evidence of what happened and I'll be taking it further, I cant beleive how many people denied any responsibility for this inhumane action in this day and age.
Louise, I agree with you that the pigeons should not have been left to starve to death behind the netting. They should have been removed before it went up.
But they are a terrbile nuisance to passers by - I myself have been the target of their sharpshooting in the past.
So on the whole i'm pleased that the pigeon proofing has gone up. Just a shame that it wasn't all the way across the road too.
