Do you find that there is more talk about climate change than action?
Here in Sutton, my colleagues and I are determined to find ways to help local residents do their bit tackle the problem.
We have built one of the UK’s first Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plants to divert more waste from landfill, reducing the cost of waste disposal for local people but reducing harmful greenhouse gases too; and we are taking a lead with Smarter Travel Sutton the biggest sustainable transport project ever run in the country in co-operation with Transport for London http://www.smartertravelsutton.org.uk/home
And in the next few months we will launch a local carbon offset programme to give Sutton residents a local option to offset the carbon impact of travel for the good of our own community.
Small change, Big difference
Did you know that buildings are responsible for half our carbon emissions, with 27 per cent alone coming from our homes? The average Swedish household spends £385 a year less on energy than the average British one even though winter temperatures are a lot lower.
If we had schemes like ‘energy mortgages’ in England that could be paid back through energy company bills, we could dramatically cut the carbon emissions from our homes and save households money.
Who is the real ‘green’ party
As the greenest of all the main parties, the Liberal Democrats have repeatedly been prepared to lead the way on firm proposals to tackle the greatest policy challenge of our time. We changed the national conversation last year with our green tax switch – putting up taxes on pollution, and cutting taxes on work, risk and effort. Those plans would deal with the hardest part of the climate change problem, namely cars and planes.
The Lib Dems will cut income tax and switch to green taxes on pollution instead. Then the more you choose to switch to greener living the more money you will save. If you would like to know more, follow the Green Tax Switch link below..
